Dangote Foundation Offers Free Shares to Nigerian Students

Dangote Foundation Offers Free Shares to Nigerian Students

The Aliko Dangote Foundation (ADF) has launched a Student Share Grant Initiative that will allow eligible Nigerian tertiary students to receive 10 additional shares in Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals FZE at no cost after subscribing for a minimum of 10 shares in the company’s ongoing Initial Public Offering (IPO).

The initiative is targeted at Nigerian students aged 18 and above enrolled in recognised public and private tertiary institutions across the country. The Foundation said the programme is designed to promote financial literacy, responsible investing and long-term asset ownership among young Nigerians.

How the Dangote student free-share programme works

Under the initiative, an eligible student must first complete the required verification process through the Foundation’s designated platform.

After successful verification, the student can subscribe for a minimum of 10 Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals FZE shares in the student’s own name and for the student’s own benefit.

The Aliko Dangote Foundation may then fund an application for an additional 10 shares in the student’s name at no cost to the student. This means a student who applies for the minimum 10 shares could have an additional 10 shares applied for on their behalf under the grant programme.

The Foundation’s official terms make clear, however, that the additional share application does not guarantee that the shares will ultimately be allotted. Both the student’s application and the Foundation-funded application remain subject to the applicable IPO allotment process.

Who is eligible?

The Student Share Grant Initiative is available to students who meet the Foundation’s eligibility and verification requirements.

Key requirements include:

  • Applicant must be 18 years or older.
  • Applicant must be enrolled in an eligible public or private tertiary institution in Nigeria.
  • The student must complete the required verification process.
  • The student must apply for at least 10 DPRP shares through the designated subscription channel.
  • The application must be made in the student’s own name and for their own benefit.
  • The student must satisfy applicable KYC, regulatory and IPO requirements.

The initiative cannot be used to purchase shares on behalf of another person and applies specifically to the Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals FZE IPO.

How much does the student need to pay?

The free-share initiative does not mean students receive the initial 10 shares for free.

A qualifying student must first subscribe for at least 10 shares in the IPO.

The IPO price is ₦525 per share, making the minimum 10-share subscription ₦5,250, according to reports on the offer.

The Foundation’s grant relates to the additional 10 shares, for which the Foundation says it may fund the application on behalf of an eligible student at no cost to that student.

Dangote Foundation explains the initiative

Aliko Dangote, Chairman of the Aliko Dangote Foundation, said the programme is intended to give young Nigerians practical exposure to saving, investing and ownership.

The Foundation said its objective extends beyond the current IPO by encouraging young people to develop an understanding of how investment and asset ownership work.

ADF Chief Executive Officer Zouera Youssoufou said the initiative combines financial education with practical experience by allowing eligible students to experience stages of the investment process, including verification, subscription, allotment and ownership.

Dangote Refinery IPO remains open

The student initiative is linked to the ongoing Initial Public Offering of Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals FZE.

The IPO opened on September 14, 2026, with the shares offered at ₦525 each, and the offer is scheduled to close on October 13, 2026.

The refinery is seeking to raise capital through the offer as Dangote plans to expand its refining capacity from approximately 700,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million barrels per day. Reuters previously reported that the IPO was targeting about $1.6 billion, with the potential to raise more if the offer is oversubscribed.

Dangote has described investor demand for the IPO as “enormous”, while Reuters reported a sharp increase in activity on some investment platforms following the launch of the offer.

Foundation warns students to use official channels

The Foundation has advised prospective participants to rely on its official communications and designated platforms when applying.

The official Student Share Grant Initiative platform states that students should review the programme’s FAQs, terms and conditions, privacy notice and the applicable IPO documentation before participating.

Students should also be aware that participating in the grant programme does not guarantee that shares will be allotted.

The Foundation specifically states that eligibility or successful verification does not create an automatic entitlement to the additional shares, and the final allotment remains subject to the applicable IPO process.

Is the Dangote student share programme investment advice?

No. The Foundation has described the programme as a financial-literacy and investment-participation initiative rather than investment advice.

Participation is voluntary, and prospective investors are encouraged to review the IPO documentation and understand the applicable risks before making an investment decision.

The value of shares can rise or fall, and receiving or being allocated shares does not guarantee a financial return.
